Rupa & Diklhush
Rupa and her brother Dilkhush
came with their mother to LLHSC in February. Rupa has another
brother too; and all three siblings
are under ten years old. Their father works as a cook while their
mother is a homemaker.
At age 昀椀ve, Dilkhush developed a
numb patch on his right hand, but
his parents ignored this for about a
year, during which 琀椀me a large red
patch appeared on his right cheek.
He ini琀椀ally received treatment from
a local pharmacy using ointments.
Then later, he started a course of
MDT, but stopped the treatment
partway through.
Rupa, who has a red skin patch
near her le昀琀 eye, was diagnosed
with leprosy at LLHSC and was
prescribed MDT for six months.
She and her family received
counselling, which stressed the importance of comple琀椀ng the en琀椀re
course of medica琀椀on to ensure an
e昀昀ec琀椀ve cure.
Rupa’s mother expressed deep
worry and sadness about the health
of her two children. However, she
was gently reassured and came
to understand that, with ongoing
care, the prac琀椀ce of self-care rou琀椀nes and a full course of treatment,
her children will grow up healthy
and free of leprosy.
This family highlights the importance of early diagnosis, adhering
to proper treatment and counselling. LLHSC sta昀昀 provided the
necessary medical treatment, but
also addressed the emo琀椀onal and
educa琀椀onal needs of the family, for
recovery and hope.
